Have to versus want to versus get to

I think when we agree to complete work we all say yes because we are there together and don't want to be like no I'm just going to eat and sleep when I get home. So that leaves it to have a 50/50 chance of actually doing the work. Being told to do homework lets us know that we have the work and we got to do it. Because agreeing on it gave us a choice this doesn't. exploring in your own way is me sleeping, if I could avoid work then I would. I do my best when I am told what to do.

Gatsby prompts further thinking

I think I would like to write about how gatsby is willing to do anything for daisy. And in an odd way tom too. I think there love is both different and I want to write about it.

Why doesn't Tom leave Daisy?

Does Daisy really love Gatsby anymore?

Does Daisy's child change anything?

What Gatsby Says to me

In my readings of the Great Gatsby, I think the central message that is love. There is a lot of different forms of it throughout the book, young love, money-hungry love, forced love, and others. It shows the different outcomes for different relationships.

Gatsby 119-153

Chapter 7, The Great Gatsby:

Nick is concerned for Gatsby when there wasn't a party and he hasn't seen him around
Rude and unfamiliar butler
Gatsby let everyone go and hired a dozen new people
He let everyone go because he didn't want gossip going around since Daisy is coming over now
Having lunch is Daisy, Tom, Nick, Jordan, and Gatsby
A phone call, mistress?
Daisy asked Tom to go get a drink then kisses Gatbsy when he left
Tom invited Gatsby over?
Tom brags to Gatsby at lunch
Tom seems to notice something and wants to go to town now
Tom just decides to take Gatsby's car and he said nothing about it
Stopped for gas at the mistress of tom husbands gas station
He found out that she has another life and wants to move
They are all talking about the heat and a man fainted at Daisy's wedding, named Biloxi
Tom keeps on bugging with questions and Daisy is trying to stop it
Gatsby explodes and starts saying that Daisy loves him an that he never loves Tom
Gatsby is wanting to get Daisy to say that she never loved Tom but she did at one point
Tom is now saying he can treat her better but then she is leaving him
Gatsby leaves with Daisy
It is Nicks birthday
Mrs. Wilson locked his wife up in the room before they move away
Myrtle escaped and gets hit by a car
She dies and the officer is starting questions
Daisy was driving the war with Gatsby
Daisy tried to move out of the way but there was a car so she moved back and hit her
Gatsby stays there all night long making sure Tom doesn't do anything
Daisy didn't turn off the light-giving Gatsby an ok for 6 hours

Add ons:

1. Gatsby stops having parties because Daisy starts coming over

2. Gatsby fires everyone so they don't spill secrets. Hires people that barely even knew that side. They are kind of cold and don't seem to show any emotions.

3. Gatsby was like chocked or not really caring bout the daughter while daisy was welcoming her.

4. Tom and Gatsby are in the same room with Daisy and he tells her to tell him to say that he is in love with her. She says she loves both of them but she leaves with Gatbsy.

5. Daisy hits Myrtle with Gatsby's car. She killed her and kept driving. Gatsby had to stop her from driving and moved to the front seat.

6. Tom and Mrytle are just sitting in silence and whispers little comments to each other. It seems that she doesn't really care for gatsby like she is never all there. Doing her own thing and not paying attention to people fully.

Gatsby 103-118

Chapter 6, The Great Gatsby:

There was a story that Gatsby's house was on a boat and he moved up and down the shore
James Gatz was Gatsby, changed his name at 17, his career started when he saw Cody drop an anchor onshore
He took Gatsby on as his assistant and gave him the name Jay Gatsby
Dan Cody died inhospitably due to drinking too much
He is the reason why Gatsby drinks so little
Gatsby inherited 25k from him, didn't get it though Because of the mistress
Gatsby and others talk and a lady invites him to dinner
Tom talks saying how she doesn't want him to go and wonders how he knows daisy
Daisy goes to a party but tom goes with
As the party goes on Tom is inclined by Gatsby

Questions and answers:

Dan Cody was a rich man and met Gatsby. I think that because this name and Gatsby were close to seeing him die from alcoholism scares him to not get him to drink as much.

The conversation was awkward, like none of them wanted to talk or actually be around each other. They did see talk smack about each other back too.

It seems as if Daisy wanted to enjoy the party but since Tom was there she couldn't. It felt like he was in her shadow the whole time, not even allowing her to really decide if she liked the party or not.

I think he should look at the situation differently. Yes use money, but not to bribe or anything. O get the stuff to recreate it and don't go all out. Live it like you did then and not like now.

Add ons:

Nick admires Gatsby

Gatsby 86-102

Chapter 5, The Great Gatsby:

Gatsby has bright enough lights that Nick thought his house was on fire
Gatsby wants to impress Dasiy
Gatsby seemed to want to give him a side job and Nick isn't wanting it
Is he doing that because he feels guilty about having him invite Daisy over
Gatsby dressed nice but didn't seem alright
Tiresome, lack of rest, maybe the nerves
Daisy thinks Nick likes her because he wanted to see her alone
Nick left the room again and Gatbsy followed
They argued a little then Gatbsy went back and talked to Daisy
Nick came back and Daisy was wiping her tears?
Why?
Gatsby "lost" all the money he inherited because of the war
Gatsby shows Nick and Daisy everything in his house
Daisy starts crying at the beautiful shirts
Gatsby is being a little stern to impress Daisy
Nick was left wanting to say bye but Jay was in a daze but Daisy still acknowledged him

Daisy is missing the romance with Jay

How do you know what I know

I think by my note-taking and questions for the test shows what I know. I feel like for the most part, I have gotten everything down and I like this book. I don't know why this book is sticking out to me compared to Romeo and Juliet or Mice and men. But I understand it and I learned a lot about all the different types of characters.

Testing understanding from the other side

Were my question's too hard, I pick small random ones but things that grabbed my attention. Lots of opening books and looking for the answer. Some of these questions are more opinions. It seems like everyone is cheating by asking others what the answers XD

Gatsby test grades

For those that took the test, sorry if the questions were hard.

Nick's Cardinal Virtues

Well, the definition of Cardinal Virtues is one of the four classically defined natural virtues prudence, justice, temperance, or fortitude. Nick's cardinal Virtue is honesty. I think the ending statement made me think is nick hiding something or more important is he telling the truth about all these things we have learned. I see Nick as this unproblematic character. I feel like he is always being dragged into something, I think he is just a curious character.

I get by with a little help from my friends

Today we are all sitting in class having a Socratic Seminar and this is what we discussed. I apologized if I missed anything tried my best to write, listen and talk.

We started with small conversations then it suddenly got into big questions. No side conversations, or failed. Recap of chapter 3. Back to big questions, about music. Now went into how music shapes your personality. Talking about campaigning. Talking about future jobs. Social media? What age is it okay to give kids phones? Parental lock why isn't used?

Abortion? Adoption is overfilled and you don't know what they can go through. Adoption is hard to go through. Money and time too long of a process.

Stereotypes? Are we acting sad or are we depressed?
Are we stable? Bullying is now different than before.

My MOM on my big question

I have been thinking about I set these goals for my big question and I think imma follow them. I want to interview people that have the most credible sources I can have. I think it will also be an eye-opener too. I like interviewing people and knowing that they trust me enough to tell me things like abuse.

Gatsby 43-64

Chapter 3, The Great Gatsby:

Nick is describing the party that is going on at Gatsby
There is a lot of alcohol hints going around
His parties didn't have invitations you just came
JAY GATSBY <-- full name
Rumor has it that gatsby killed a man or is a German Spy
Nick and Jordon go off from the dinner to look for Gatsby and find themselves in the library with a drunk man
it seemed that at the party that there was a lot of alcohol being served
Said to be served in finger bowl-sized bowls
Some from the war remember Nick, offered to take him around in a hydroplane
Gay as in happy
The man turned out to be Gatsby
Gatsby first introduced, seems very polite
Nick wants to know more about him
Nick's nickname is oldsport
Nick stayed long, after 2
After leaving a man got his car stuck in a ditch, he was the drunk same guy that was in the library
Starts talking about his past experiences with Jordan
Has or had a crush on Jordon, Jordon is a dishonest person

He says "I am one of the few honest people
that I have ever known."

He says this most likely because he is talking about his past and most likely because he knows he isn't most likely telling the truth about certain things.

My un/finished symphony

I got a lot to do, it feels like I got homework from every class. I hate homework. We spend our whole day at school and practice to g home to eat, spend time with family, and sleep then we have homework. I stay up past 11 sometimes because of it and get to bed by 12-1. I hate homework. But my goal is to finish it all.

BQGSD

I was thinking of what to do, should I do some research or just continue thinking? As I sat here at a wrestling match I thought, why not interview someone? So I went on and here is how it went:

He was willing to tell me everything but wanted to stay anonymous.

I asked a lot of questions and made sure to know where to draw the line, never even met this guy. Yet he was willing to talk about his experiences. I admire that.

- He stayed with her and didn't see the signs of physical and emotional abuse
- He felt a reason why he didn't come to realize it was since he was new to the dating world
- He was afraid of leaving because they have been together for over 8 months
- Over people's opinions didn't bother him
- When he decided to step up and break up with her, she was heartbroken and he never was able to tell her the reasons why is because hse abused him

Before I ended it, I asked an important question. If you were in a new relationship and saw the signs of abuse would you leave it immediately?

- Yes, I would. I dated this girl after my ex and I already got a few signs so I broke it off.

This is what I want to do next, interview others, research or watch interviews from actual victims.

Gatsby 5-26

In my English AP class, we started the Great Gatsby. My notes:

The father and nick relationship is on value
one of the values is to not criticize
nick says the young men are lying about there love stories
New Haven = Yale
The narrator and the family are very revered
giving the dog gave connection and draws us in to want to know more about him
Nick can get along with anyone
supercilious means to be too serious
fractiousness is to break things apart
Tom kind of selfish,  brags, racist, cheater?
Divan = phone,  wan = pale, languidly = too relaxed, claret = a type of wine, infinitesimal = very small,
Daisy is self-absorbed, always onto something else

(It is starting at 5 because the copy I have that is the first page)
