I think he wrote this story because it had to bring out many important aspects. Even though it was fiction it did have things in the story that he didn't make up. Religion, location, and people. He made a spooky story with a background to support it. I have read IT by Stephen King and with the way he writes compared to Hawthorne is very different. So, I am lead to believe that King liked it so much because it was a different kind of scary. Involving religion and actual places. It just shows that people can have a large imagination and they can be quite creative. Who knows how they get words on a paper to frighten people. The words just find a way to disturb them.
